Well 2020 didn’t quite go how any of us expected, did it? I spent two weeks in hospital at the start of the year with ulcerative colitis (don’t recommend it), and had to temporarily close my business because of the corona virus. Still, there are lots of people who are far worse off than me so despite the rocky start to the year I consider myself very fortunate.
Trying to add a silver lining to the shitty grey cloud that was 2020, I was afforded much more painting time so let’s have a look at what I got done!
I go these nasty looking lads done early on. The good thing about these is that they can be used for all manner of stuff. 40K, WHFB, Dragon Rampant, and demonic encounters in Frostgrave. They were quite easy to paint too. Washes and drybrushing got them done in next to no time!
Another all purpose unit. They’ll be Citi Def for 2000ad games, ship security for the upcoming StarGrave, and veterans for my Imperial Guard army.
Me and my mate Rich both have an interest in doing some Crusade gaming, so these lads from Northstar were an obvious choice for me. They will also see action as a Dragon Rampant army too. I quite fancied a small force for the first crusade too, so the Conquest Miniatures Normans were the obvious choice.
This chunk has been on the to-paint list for a LONG time. I was so excited to finally get one! He’ll be the leader for the unit of Bob Olley ogres I painted last year. I reckon they’ll be a mercenary contingent to any and all of my other forces.
I painted these to use for Grimdark Future Firefight. I’ve always thought of the Grey Knights as being so rock hard that you’d only ever see a squad on the table at any one time. When shit gets to dodgy for even the space marines, you send in these lads!
I got most of these off my mate Jason as payment for some illustration work. These lads will get shoehorned into games of LotR most likely.
If you’re treadhead, you like this one 🙂 I did a guys to go with my Imperial Guard, but the main focus has been tanks. Most of these are stock GW tanks, but the AA one was converted using a Dust Tactics turret, and the command tank is from Ramshackle.
I got bitten by the Badab bug and did these three. Was hoping to do more, but got distracted by other things. Maybe this year I’ll do a few more.
StarBastard! Me and some mates had a friendly challenge to paint up a space marine that’s had enough of it all and decided to just strike out alone. RTB01, Frostgrave, and HH plastic bits in this one.
I love me some kanz and dreads. I did the first two the year, and the others were from previous years. I like to run a dreadmob when I play 40K, so these two were obvious choices. The grot and boy were for a very slowly growing warband. Can’t have a proper dreadmob without a Mega Dread! He’s a lovely mini, and I can’t wait to get him on the table. The Grot tanks are old ArmourCast minis, but I don’t recall what they were actually listed as on their site. They are perfect for grot tanks though. Finally I did two artillery pieces. The one on the left is a FW model, and the one on the right is kitbashed from whatever I had in my bits box. Not enough fat orks, so I used another Ramshackle mini with a headswap as my Big Mek.
The skeletons are lovely old sculpts from Northstar. No particular use for them, but an undead group is always worth having. They’ll get used in all manner of games.
Another project that got off to a good start, but soon ran out of steam. I’ve got enough Death Guard for a small army but, as is of the the case, something shiny caught my eye and distracted me 😦
I don’t remember why, but I got an itch to do some, smaller scale stuff. I saw that Pendraken were doing a lot to help during the corona pandemic and that gave me the excuse to spend some money on their wares 🙂
Pointy eared stuff! The harlequins have been on my bucket list for a while. Always a sucker for Jez sculpts. The Oathmark elves look more like how I imagine LotR elves to look so I grabbed two boxes of those for future games.
Me and my mate Andy have been playing through the Frostgrave campaign in the first book, but proxying so we can set our games in a more Rogue Trader setting. The guys in the first pic are our wizards and apprentices, the other guy is a tracker, and the last pic is rad zombies and some random beastie.
Started to make some inroads into my beastman stash too. The warriors and demon are from the Pantheon of Chaos Kickstarter I worked on ages ago. I’ve some humans already done, so thought these would make a nice allied force to go with them. I’m hoping to do some political shields too.
Legends of the Old West is pretty firmly on my gaming radar so I got these guys done. They will easily work in Dracula’s America too, or any kind of Pulp rules for that matter.
This lovely chap is from Krakon games. I thought he’d make a good Sensei. Now he just needs a retinue of faithful disciples to follow him.
Got my hands on a copy of Space Hulk, but I really don’t like the terminators that come in the game. Far too much bling for my liking. These FW lads will get used instead. The larger group shot is them alongside stuff I did earlier.
Another started but very much unfinished project. This guy is supposed to be a proto-space marine, back when the Emperor was still alive and well. I’d love to do a small force of these eventually, but the to-do list gets ever longer…
I also spent a large part of the year drawing! There were quite a few small pieces, but here are some of the covers I did.
And that’s it for the year. Pretty productive all things considered! A few unfinished projects that I might see finished in 2021, and I’ve also got the OWAC army challenge to get on with too.
Here’s hoping that we all have a safe, stable, healthy, and productive year in 2021! Cheers for taking a look at my minis 🙂
